As a cinematic artifact, Clueless clashes two seemingly opposing drives: materialism and temperance. Though never fully reconciled, these ideologies manage to coexist in the film’s main character. Clueless succeeds in that it is not a film bent on shaming a young girl interested in fashion. Rather, it is a film about someone who is still learning about themselves from the outside in. It is a film about self-discovery through aesthetic practice.
